Today I will be talking about the Oyster!
💧Oysters can form “oyster reefs” that mangroves can build islands upon
💧They're found in estuaries across the world
💧A single oyster can filter 50 gallons (189 liters) of water per day
💧Oyster farming is now regulated because they were over harvested in the 20th century
💧Their shells can cut through skin easily, as well as the soles of shoes
What YOU can do is... limit the amount and frequency of your consumption of oysters, help with oyster reef restoration projects (FGCU puts some on) and last but not least be an advocate for them. Oyster farming still brings in millions of dollars to Florida and the country, but the ecosystem services they provide to our waterways are invaluable! Even though they may not be the “cutest” animal, they are vitally important to the health of our coastlines and deserve the same level of respect as our other ocean friends!
